Just before the lockdown happened I managed to get out and explore some rock. Normally I would bitch about hiking uphill with fifty pounds stuffed into my less than ergonomic back pack. On this day, I embraced it. The hard snow crunching under my boots, the welcoming sound of chirping birds, the heat of the sun on my face, even the weight of the gear on my back, all felt so good on this cold crisp morning. All my senses were heightened as I slowly made my way up the hill. I realized in that moment that I was feeling "flow". I was truly just in the moment. It's a rare feeling for me, and doesn't come easy, but it's why I climb. I've sometimes experienced it at work, or while playing my bass guitar, but never as profoundly as I do when it happens while climbing. There's a moment when everything around you slows down, nothing else exists except your focus and acute awareness of everything in your immediate bubble. All that just to say that there is a hidden gem of a climbing video in Reel Rock 7. In the bonus extras, there's a short section highlighting Dalia Ojeda climbing Mind Control in Oliana Spain. It's filmed in one constant shot without any editing. You can feel the state of flow she is in. Call it flow, or the zone, or being in the moment, whichever. There is no better feeling.
